The Lower Kuja Study Area forms part of the South Nyanza Lower Plain, in Nyanza Province, facing Lake Victoria’s Karungu Bay. The Plain is made up of alluvial formations of the Rivers Kuja and Migori, downstream of Macalder Hills. The gross geographical area is 5,779 Ha with the proposed Kimai Scheme covering 3,279 Ha and the Sagama Scheme 2,500 Ha. It is bordered on the North by the swampy area of Karungu Bay, on the East partly by the Macalder-Karungu national road and partly by the Kuja River, on the south by the 1,145m contour line running from the confluence of the Ongoche Migori with Kuja and on the west by the swampy areas facing Lake Victoria.
The uncropped lands are near the swampy area and on the surrounding hills The National Irrigation Board (NIB) has engaged GIBB Africa Ltd to carry out a Feasibility Study, Detailed Design and the Preparation of Tender Documents for the Lower Kuja Irrigation Development Project. Implementation of the project is expected to result in the following benefits: - Food security at the local level;
- Creation of employment and income generation at the local level;
- Sustainable supply of raw materials for agro-based industries;
- Foreign exchange generation through the export of surplus food and cash crops.
The project has an environmental impact assessment component and pre-feasibility study of the existing Goro Falls Dam for irrigation development. The beneficiaries of the project are the local community, who are smallholder farmers.
The assignment is to be in four phases:
Phase 1 Data Collection and Review / Inception Activities; Phase 2 Preliminary Feasibility Study / Investigations; Phase 3 Detailed Feasibility Study; Phase 4 Detailed Design and Tender Documents.
The consultancy services commenced on 15 February 2010 and are expected to last 10 months.
